“The figures capture a moment suspended in the eternal ‘present, which frees the viewer from the constraints of linear time.

There is no weighted history, and no expectation for the future. This is an invitation into a moment of physical existence which is both fleeting and eternal. The use of wax and bronze expresses the ephemerality as well as the substance of the moment.”

The best known version of the ballad of Thomas the Rhymer was written by Walter Scott.

It tells the tale of the young Thomas encountering the Queen of Elfland who lures him into the mysterious green woods, after offering him three choices: the straight road to hell, the rocky road to Heaven or the green road to Elfland.

He chooses the green road to Elfland, and there he remains for seven years. On his emergence from the woods the queen offers him an apple which has magic properties and after eating the apple Thomas is unable to lie and becomes True Thomas.

True Thomas is said to be based on Thomas de Ercildoune{Earlston} who lived in the 13th century and was renowned as a poet and prophet, similar to the legend of Merlin.

These three bronzes were inspired by the ballad and in turn inspired the creation of a musical play written by John Sampson, Julia Munrow and Pete Baynes.

The bronzes featured in the performance at the Scottish Story Telling centre and at the Edinburgh festival in August 2024.
